Overview

The Volusia Literacy Council is a non-profit United Way agency specializing in one-on-one tutoring of adult who possess literacy skills at a ninth grade level or lower. The Council is a member of ProLiteracy Worldwide and follows their guidelines for tutor and student training. The Council's activities and fundraising events are directed by a volunteer board of directors.

Programs

Beginning reading, writing, math and daily survival skills
Workplace education, family literacy, and ESL – English as a Second Language

Tutoring Schedule

Specific schedules are determined by Program Directors and could include morning, afternoon or evening sessions. Tutors and students are expected to meet two times each week for one or two hours each session.

Tutoring Locations

Tutoring is conducted at numerous pre-approved public locations throughout Volusia County. A list of approved sites is provided at tutor training and when students enroll.

Tutor-Student Matching

Tutors and students are matched based on geographical location, time availability and personal preferences (e.g. non-smoker preferred, female tutor preferred, etc.)

Tutor Training

All tutors must complete 10 hours of training by a ProLiteracy Worldwide trainer.
