Listed below are answers to commonly asked questions regarding the Volusia Literacy Council and our programs.
What is the Volusia Literacy Council?
It is an independent, nonprofit organization, governed by a volunteer board of directors. The Council’s mission is to affect community-wide change by improving individual literacy skills and increasing literacy awareness.
What programs does Volusia Literacy Council offer?
The Council offers literacy instruction in basic literacy, math, writing, workplace skills and life skills to adults (over 16 years of age), native speakers of English, as well as those for who English is not their first language. Instruction is provided at no cost by trained volunteer tutors in either small group settings, or one-to-one. Volusia Literacy Council also offers family literacy services in Volusia County.
What is required to be a tutor?
Volunteer tutors must be at least 18 years of age, have a GED or high school diploma, and possess the ability to read and speak English fluently. Tutor training is provided for volunteer tutors. The completion of 10 hours of free basic training is required before tutors are assigned to a student.
Do I need previous teaching experience?
No. Volusia Literacy Council will provide you with training and support required.
Should a tutor know a language other than English?
Knowledge of a language other than English is not required.
How are tutoring assignments made?
Tutors are matched with a student or a small group of students by a Program Director, taking into account the needs, skills, goals and location of the student(s) and tutor(s). Time and overall availability are also factors considered in assigning students and tutors.
Where does tutoring take place?
Tutoring is conducted at numerous pre-approved public locations throughout Volusia County. A list of approved sites is provided at tutor training and when students enroll.
How often do tutors meet with their students?
Tutors and students are asked to meet twice a week for a minimum of one to two hours.
Is a tutor expected to teach a certain length of time?
Tutors and students alike are asked to make a one-year commitment.
Is there a cost for the training or tutoring?
All training and tutoring materials are provided free of charge.
What resources are available to assist me with my tutoring?
Program Directors will provide tutors with the necessary materials for tutoring sessions, based on the needs of the students.
